Residents of school districts throughout the Hudson Valley go to the polls today to decide school budgets and ballot measures, including library budgets in addition to electing trustees to Boards of Education.

A total of 22 candidates are seeking school board seats in Putnam’s six school districts.

Voters often become confused over the phrase ‘tax levy.’

The tax levy is the total amount a district collects in property taxes. A higher levy means more taxes are collected overall, but it does not directly determine an individual property tax bill, which also depends on property assessments, equalization rates, and exemptions.

In order to cast a ballot today, residents must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the school district for at least 30 days before the election. Some districts may require proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or utility bill.

Polls remain open until 9 p.m.
