John Bernard Arnold III did not die alone. The 98-year-old World War II veteran who once served aboard the USS Houston was buried Monday at Cedar Knoll Cemetery in Taunton, surrounded by fellow veterans, friends, and admirers.

He outlived his family, but not the admiration of others who wanted to recognize him for serving the country.

During his time in the Navy, according to a social media post asking for people to attend his funeral, he visited 27 countries and often shared memories of beautiful places like Naples, Venice, Florence, Sardinia and Capri with his caregivers at Veterans Affairs.

Before joining the Navy, Arnold graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, Rhode Island and also attended Rhode Island State University. He later lived in East Bridgewater. Rest in honor, John.
