NEWBURGH – The massive housing development initiative in the City of Newburgh is moving ahead with the planned construction of The Green Apartments at Smith and Montgomery streets.

After cutting through over a year’s worth of red tape, the project Kearney Realty & Development Group will build between 120 and 140 homes on former Urban Renewal land, and Mayor Torrance Harvey said families that were displaced from this Urban Renewal property may be able to relocate there.

“We made sure there was some provisions where if families can prove they were part of that urban renewal and they had property, they would have first dibs and be a priority with a lottery in securing one of those apartments,” he said.

The city council has also approved a tax break for the developer with a 33-year Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement.

Kearney has also built the East End Lofts apartments in Newburgh.
