NEWBURGH – Residents in the City of Newburgh are concerned that police surveillance cameras are spying on them, and images could be turned over to federal authorities looking for undocumented people.

Councilman Omari Shakur is one opposed to the Flock cameras and he is preparing local legislation to get rid of them with the estimated $254,000 savings being used for better purposes.

“Increase the availability of public transportation, particularly to job sites, childcare subsidies for low wage Newburgh workers, housing subsidies to prevent displacement of long-term residents, and adding job training or apprentice programs for Newburgh residents,” he said.

But police top brass says those 88 cameras are only used for Newburgh investigations.
