President Donald Trump said Monday that he is considering the possibility of adding Venezuela as a U.S. state, according to comments relayed during a phone conversation with Fox News.
In remarks reported by Fox News, correspondent Bill Melugin said Trump told anchor John Roberts during a phone call that he is “seriously considering” making Venezuela “the 51st state.”

According to Melugin, Trump also stated that “Venezuela loves Trump” while discussing the idea during the conversation.
The remarks come months after U.S. authorities captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, an event Trump has referenced publicly while discussing the country’s political future.
Trump has also highlighted his relationship with Venezuelan acting president Delcy Rodríguez in recent appearances and statements.
Fox News reportedly pointed to Venezuela’s large oil reserves as a potential strategic factor behind Trump’s comments, noting estimates placing the country’s reserves at roughly $40 trillion.
The discussion follows a series of previous remarks by Trump regarding possible territorial expansion or statehood concepts involving neighboring countries and regions. Since beginning his second term, Trump has repeatedly discussed the possibility of Canada joining the United States as the 51st state and has separately referenced the Canadian province of Alberta.
Alberta is expected to hold a future vote regarding separation from Canada, an issue Trump has previously referenced while discussing North American energy and trade relationships.
