LEOMINSTER — WIN Waste Innovations hosted Leominster Cub Scout troop 16 at its recycling and rail transfer station the evening of April 27 for a private tour and educational experience designed to help them achieve their “waste” badges. More than 40 scouts and family members attended.

Scouts earn their “waste” badge only once they have learned the basics about waste, including how recycling works, where unrecyclable waste ends up, and sustainable waste management. The experience at WIN Waste was designed to help them understand the process by seeing it on site and learning from those who work in the industry.

“These scouts were curious and open-minded,” said Travis Hodgkins, General Manager at WIN Waste Innovations Leominster. “Their excitement brought lots of smiles to our faces. They were a great reminder of why we specialize in sustainable waste management — to preserve the environment and natural resources for the next generations.”

In addition to the tour and explanation of how waste works, the scouts got to sit in the cab of a WIN Waste truck and several pieces of heavy equipment used at the Leominster plant daily. They also enjoyed a pizza dinner.

WIN Waste’s Leominster site specializes in the recycling of construction and demolition waste (C&D). The site recovers hundreds of tons of recyclables each month. WIN Waste sends asphalt, brick, concrete, cardboard, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and wood to recycling facilities to be used as material for new products.

WIN Waste ships the waste that cannot be recycled to its final disposal site using rail, the lowest-carbon mode of land transport.
