The U.S. military announced Sunday that recovery teams have located the remains of an American soldier who disappeared during military exercises in Morocco after falling from a cliff during a recreational hike connected to the deployment.
Military officials identified the soldier as Kendrick Lamont Key Jr., a 27-year-old Air Defense Artillery officer assigned to Charlie Battery, 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment under the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command.
According to U.S. military officials, Key was one of two American service members involved in the incident while hiking during downtime associated with training operations in Morocco last week.
United States Army Europe and Africa confirmed Sunday that search and recovery teams located Key’s remains following a weeklong operation in difficult terrain.
A second U.S. soldier involved in the fall remains missing, according to a U.S. defense official cited in reports. Search and rescue efforts are continuing.
Military officials have not yet publicly identified the second soldier.
The incident occurred while American troops were participating in military activities in Morocco as part of ongoing cooperation and joint training operations between the United States and Moroccan armed forces.
No additional details regarding the exact location of the accident or the circumstances surrounding the fall were immediately released by military authorities.
The 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, to which Key was assigned, is responsible for providing integrated air and missile defense capabilities for U.S. forces operating in Europe and Africa.
Officials said the investigation into the incident remains ongoing as recovery personnel continue searching for the missing service member.
