LEOMINSTER — A group of five, all-volunteer members of No. 6 Community Center, Inc., picked up branches, raked, mowed and hauled away a trailer load on Saturday in preparation for its annual Open House to be held Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The use of a member’s tractors along with old fashioned raking and elbow grease were used to clean the grounds and Memorial Garden at the center.
The organization formed in 1949 has dedicated itself to continuous maintenance and upkeep of the city-owned “Little Red Schoolhouse,” located at 3 Wachusett St., at the corners of Pleasant, Union and Wachusett Streets in Leominster.
Two years ago, through a grant the schoolhouse was painted and had repairs completed.
The organization welcomes everyone to come in and see the historic one-room schoolhouse during the Open House while in the neighborhood on the way to or return from the Sholan Farm Apple Blossom Festival, which is being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at Sholan Farms, 1125 Pleasant St., Leominster.
There will be a free raffle for anyone who stops by at the No. 6 Community Center open house. The schoolhouse will have pupils’ desks, textbooks and related historical materials on display. Photos of former students as well as photos of more current activities may also be perused at your leisure.

The No. 6 Community Center held its annual meeting and election of officers and board members recently at its potluck supper. The group welcomes anyone interested in preserving Leominster’s last one-room schoolhouse to join our group. Annual membership is $10 per adult with a $20 cap for families. Please consider supporting our mission. We are on FACEBOOK at No. 6 Community Center, Inc. We are currently in need of some individual or a contractor to perform stabilization of the assorted stone markers on the property. We have a treasury with funding available upon approval of the officers, directors, and members. Please contact our President Dave Kelly at 978-870-6792.
