CITY OF POUGHKEEPSIE – Public works Commissioner Chris Gent outlined a proposal Tuesday to enforce a 25 mph speed limit citywide to the Common Council. Commissioner Gent’s plan calls for hundreds of new speed limit signs across the city, seasonal speed humps in school zones, and three speed cameras across different school zones, with the possibility of more cameras pending state approval.
Many people attended the meeting to demonstrate support for the proposal, including Poughkeepsie resident Rob Serratto.
“So many of our streets don’t feel safe, and when our streets feel unsafe, people pull back … we spend less time in the city, and that has real consequences both for our quality of life and our local economy,” Serrato said.
The Council has been considering lowering the 30 mph speed limit since 2024, when the state legislature changed the law to allow cities to set lower speed limits.
Certain city streets already have speed limits lower than 30 mph. .
