CARMEL – Summer like temperatures accompanied by intense winds snapped a tree on Drewville Road at the Carmel-Mahopac border resulting in severed utility lines which ignited brush causing a large blaze that blackened four acres of land on Tuesday.

Carmel firefighters were summoned during the afternoon, and once the seriousness of the fire became clear, additional help was requested from the Mahopac, Brewster, and Lake Carmel departments.

Arcing wires made it difficult for emergency responders to fight the fire effectively.   The Bureau of Emergency Services called in NYSEG teams to assist as well.

Electric service and cable services provided by both NYSEG and Comcast became interrupted for a time for scores of residents until crews were able to isolate the outage.

Drewville Road in the vicinity of West Shore Drive was closed by Carmel Police for most of the afternoon.
