Phil Mickelson withdraws from LIV Virginia and PGA Championship Amid Family Health Concerns

Six-time major champion will miss both this week’s LIV Golf Virginia event and next week’s as he steps away from competition to attend to a personal family health matter, casting uncertainty over his short-term playing future.

The 55-year-old golfer had initially been listed among the 154-player field for the PGA Championship, scheduled to take place at in Pennsylvania from May 14–17. However, in a brief exchange with golf outlet Flushing It Golf, Mickelson confirmed he would not be able to compete.

“I wish I could. I can’t unfortunately,” Mickelson said, expressing disappointment over his withdrawal. He added that while he hopes to return later in the year, his immediate playing schedule remains unclear. “I’m hoping to play the rest of the year after that, but I honestly don’t know,” he admitted, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding his situation.

Tournament organizers quickly moved to fill the vacancy, with announced as Mickelson’s replacement in the PGA Championship lineup. Meanwhile, in the LIV Golf circuit, Mickelson’s absence will also be felt. He had been slated to compete in the LIV Golf Virginia event at , but will now sit out. Fellow professional will step in to replace him for the tournament.

Mickelson’s 2026 season has already been limited. He has competed in just one LIV Golf event so far this year, finishing tied for 48th in South Africa in March. He also missed April’s , a tournament he has won three times during his illustrious career, further fueling speculation about his form and availability.
