DEAR BONNIE: Can the anniversary date of a loved one’s passing affect me energetically? Recently, I realized I was not acting like my happy self and I didn’t understand why. Any insight you have into this would help. Thanks, Anthony
DEAR ANTHONY: I, too, have had this happen to me and then upon looking at the date on the calendar I saw why.
Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever found yourself feeling inexplicably heavy, perhaps more tearful than usual, or just “off” for a few days, only to glance at the calendar and realize a significant anniversary is approaching?
Recently, I found myself riding a wave of unexpected emotion. I felt a deep, lingering sadness that I couldn’t quite pin to a specific event in my current week. It wasn’t until I looked at the date that the realization hit me: it had been exactly six years since my father moved on to Heaven. My soul remembered what my conscious mind hadn’t yet acknowledged.
If you are feeling a shift in your energy as a loved one’s anniversary nears, know that you are not alone. Our bodies and spirits often keep a “silent calendar” that vibrates with the memory of those we’ve lost.
Understanding the energy of remembrance
Grief isn’t a straight line; it’s more like the tide. As an anniversary approaches, your energy field may become more sensitive. This “anniversary effect” can manifest itself in several ways:
• Physical Fatigue: Feeling drained or needing more sleep than usual.
• Emotional Fragility: Finding yourself moved to tears by a song, a scent, or a passing thought.
• Mental Fog: Difficulty focusing on daily tasks as your subconscious processes the milestone.
Recognizing that this as a natural energetic response can help you give yourself the grace you deserve. You aren’t “backsliding” in your healing; you are simply honoring a deep connection.
Rituals to honor their Light
When the day arrives, or in the days leading up to it, creating a conscious ritual can help channel that heavy energy into a beautiful tribute. Here are a few ways to honor your loved one:
• The Empty Chair Invitation: Set a place at the table for them during dinner. Share a meal they loved and speak aloud a favorite memory. It acknowledges their continued presence in your heart.
• Nature’s Release: Write a letter to them expressing everything you’re feeling right now. When you’re finished, you can safely burn the paper to “send” the message, or plant it in the soil under a new flower or tree.
• Acts of Legacy: Perform a random act of kindness in their name. If they loved animals, donate to a shelter; if they were a gardener, share some seeds with a neighbor. This carries their light forward into the world.
• The Lighted Path: Light a candle at the start of the day and let it burn (safely) until sunset. As you strike the match, set an intention to focus on the love you shared rather than just the loss.
A gentle reminder: if you are approaching a difficult date, please be kind to yourself. Your energy is sensitive right now because your love remains so strong. Whether it has been one year or sixty, that bond is eternal. You are navigating this path with strength, even on the days when it feels like you’re just standing still.
How has your own “internal calendar” shown up for you lately?
