GARDNER — The student body of Mount Wachusett Community College has elected Samuel Nieves Jr. of Fitchburg to serve as its representative to the college’s Board of Trustees, bringing a dynamic blend of leadership, creativity and community service.

Raised by his single grandmother, Nieves credits his upbringing with shaping his resilience and drive. From an early age, he was encouraged to explore the arts, developing a deep passion for dance. His dedication and talent earned him merit-based scholarships to some of the nation’s most prestigious programs, including the Boston Ballet and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Through these experiences, he cultivated discipline, confidence, stage presence and showmanship, qualities that continue to influence his leadership and entrepreneurial pursuits.

Nieves has emerged as a student and community leader at MWCC and across Central Massachusetts. He founded an organization that grew into the Social Light Business Club, a collaborative networking space for entrepreneurs, students and local business owners. He also launched the associated Sociallight.club, a platform dedicated to fostering connection, collaboration and community growth.

His commitment to service is equally impactful. Nieves launched a suit drive initiative to collect and distribute professional attire to individuals in need across the region. The initiative has collected and donated more than 700 suits to date, helping community members step into new opportunities with confidence and dignity.

“Sam represents the very best of MWCC students, he is driven, compassionate, and deeply committed to uplifting others,” said MWCC President James Vander Hooven. “We are excited to welcome his voice and perspective to the Board.”

“As Student Trustee I look forward to continuing the work I believe in; bringing people together, creating opportunities, and empowering others through connection, confidence, and leadership,” stated Nieves.

Currently pursuing a degree in business administration, Nieves has served as the President of the Student Government Association where he advocated for student engagement, collaboration, and meaningful community impact. He will continue this work in his new role, taking over for current Student Trustee Beckett Caisse when he is sworn in this May.
