A luxury yacht associated with a sanctioned Russian oligarch successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, moving between the United Arab Emirates and Oman despite ongoing U.S. naval restrictions and Iranian oversight of the critical waterway.
The 142-foot vessel departed Dubai on Friday and later reached Muscat, Oman, according to ship-tracking data from MarineTraffic. The yacht, flying a Russian flag, is reported to have ties to a sanctioned individual, making its successful passage notable amid heightened enforcement activity in the region.
Its movement places it among a limited number of civilian vessels to traverse the corridor during the current ceasefire period between the United States and Iran. While open conflict has paused, diplomatic engagement has stalled, with Tehran declining to commit to additional negotiations expected in Islamabad, Pakistan.
President Donald Trump said Monday that Iranian officials had communicated concerns about internal instability and requested access to the vital maritime route.
“Iran has just informed us that they are in a ‘State of Collapse.’ They want us to ‘Open the Hormuz Strait,’ as soon as possible, as they try to figure out their leadership situation (Which I believe they will be able to do!). Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important energy corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments. Continued restrictions, combined with uncertainty over future negotiations, have limited commercial and private maritime traffic, even as isolated transits such as this one continue under close monitoring.
