German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sharply criticized Iran’s handling of diplomatic talks with the United States, accusing the Iranian leadership of humiliating the U.S. by making American officials travel to Pakistan for talks that ultimately yielded no results. Merz’s comments, delivered on April 27, 2026, reveal deepening divisions between the U.S. and its NATO allies, particularly on issues related to the ongoing Iran conflict.

Merz emphasized that while the Iranians were skilled in avoiding meaningful negotiations, the American efforts to resolve the situation had failed to produce tangible outcomes.

He highlighted how U.S. officials traveled to Islamabad, only to leave without securing any agreements with Iran, further illustrating Tehran’s ability to outmaneuver American diplomacy.

The German Chancellor also voiced concerns about the broader impact of the conflict, warning that the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil shipments, had become increasingly volatile, with parts of the strait possibly being mined.

In response, Germany had offered to deploy minesweepers to assist in clearing the waterway, a gesture that reflects the growing economic consequences for Europe.

Merz’s criticism underscores the mounting frustration within Europe, especially as U.S. actions in the region continue to bypass European consultation. He lamented the lack of coordinated strategy between the U.S. and its European allies, highlighting the financial and economic burdens that the ongoing conflict has imposed on Germany and its taxpayers.

Merz’s comments come at a time when the prospects for de-escalating tensions seem to be dwindling. Attempts to revive peace talks, including a visit by U.S. envoys to Islamabad, were canceled after talks with Iranian officials failed.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, traveled to Russia in an effort to explore alternative diplomatic channels after unsuccessful negotiations in Pakistan and Oman.

As the diplomatic stalemate continues, Merz urged that the situation be resolved swiftly, stressing the urgent need for a more effective strategy to prevent further humiliation of the U.S. and to alleviate the growing economic strain on Europe.
