KINGSTON – To date, the City of Kingston has diverted 100 tons of food waste from the landfill thanks to everyone who uses the 11 voluntary food scrap drop-off locations.
“Together, we are making a big difference in reducing the city’s solid waste and related tipping fees, reducing greenhouse emissions during transportation, and producing nutrient-rich compost,” said Mayor Steven Noble.
Now, starting in June, the city is embarking on phase two of its organics collection with free, voluntary curbside food scrap collection.
Registration is open for residents to receive a free city-issued five-gallon container, which will be used for weekly curbside organics collection on your regular trash day.
The mayor said beginning in June, a new all-electric garbage truck will be used to collect food scraps curbside, further minimizing the city’s carbon footprint.
Drop-off collections will also continue after curbside collection is launched, and registration remains open for drop-off participation.
