Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek is making an aggressive push to win over developers by offering a steep 75% discount on its newly introduced AI model, DeepSeek-V4-Pro, available at the reduced rate until May 5. The move signals intensifying competition in the global AI space, where companies are racing to deliver powerful models at more accessible prices.
In addition to the headline discount, DeepSeek announced a major cost reduction across its API ecosystem. Prices for input cache hits—used to speed up repeated queries—have been cut to just one-tenth of their original cost. The company shared the update via its official account on X, highlighting its broader effort to make AI tools more affordable and scalable for developers and businesses.
The pricing changes come shortly after DeepSeek released a preview of its highly anticipated V4 model lineup. The new system has been specifically optimized to work with hardware from Huawei, a strategic decision that aligns with China’s push to build a more self-reliant tech ecosystem amid ongoing global chip restrictions.
The V4 series is being offered in two distinct versions: a high-performance Pro model and a lighter, more cost-efficient Flash variant. While the Pro version is designed for advanced use cases and carries a higher price tag outside the promotional window, the Flash model targets users who need faster, more affordable performance for less demanding tasks.
According to DeepSeek, the Pro model demonstrates strong performance in world-knowledge benchmarks, outperforming many open-source competitors. However, it still trails behind proprietary systems such as Gemini-Pro-3.1 developed by Google. Even so, closing the gap with leading closed-source models marks a significant step forward for open AI development.
DeepSeek also emphasized that its V4 models are particularly well-suited for powering AI agents—advanced systems capable of carrying out complex, multi-step tasks with minimal human input. Unlike traditional chatbots, which primarily handle conversation, AI agents can execute workflows, automate decisions, and interact with digital environments. These capabilities, however, demand greater computational resources, making cost efficiency a critical factor for widespread adoption.
By combining competitive performance with aggressive pricing, DeepSeek appears to be positioning itself as a serious contender in the rapidly evolving AI market. The company’s strategy could put pressure on both open-source and proprietary model providers to rethink pricing and accessibility, especially as demand for scalable AI solutions continues to grow across industries.
