WILBUR – The Kingston Land Trust cut the ribbon Friday on Red Fox Ravine, a 12.5-acre recreational area with three trails and an overlook of the Rondout Creek.
“I highly recommend you go check it out,” said Katy Mejia, communications director for the Kingston Land Trust, of the lookout.
Wilbur, a hamlet along the Rondout Creek, was once a major shipping point for blue stone quarried in Ulster County. Now it has a barge works, and the nearby steep hills, with caves, is now terraced with trails as part of Red Fox Ravine.
“We’ve done a lot of work with signage to make sure people are safe,” said Mejia. “But it’s really here (near the entrance) we have the fence, and we need to add additional space, so that more people feel safe. And that they come here because you’re literally on the edge of a ravine, and it’s kind of intense.”
The recreation area, a short right turn from the hamlet center heading back to the City of Kingston, also has a stage for music and other events.
