Iran’s newly elevated supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is reportedly undergoing ongoing medical treatment after sustaining injuries during a U.S. airstrike earlier in the conflict, according to a New York Times report.

Citing senior Iranian officials, the report states that Khamenei has already undergone multiple surgical procedures on one leg and is expected to receive a prosthetic. He is also said to require reconstructive surgery for burns affecting his face and lips.

Khamenei, the son of former leader Ali Khamenei, has not appeared publicly since assuming leadership, instead issuing written statements through social media channels. His absence has coincided with reports that other factions within Iran’s leadership structure are exerting increased influence.

According to the report, his physical condition has limited his direct engagement, raising questions about his ability to consolidate authority across the country’s political and military institutions.

Donald Trump on Thursday referenced what he described as divisions within Iran’s leadership, suggesting tensions between competing factions could be affecting decision-making.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected that characterization the same day, stating that the government remains unified and describing the country’s leadership as maintaining “ironclad unity.”

The situation comes as the region continues to experience heightened tensions amid ongoing conflict, with leadership dynamics inside Iran drawing increased international attention.
