GOSHEN – Onsite audits of the Orange County Jail’s ICE detainee units have found no issues, according to jail officials who addressed the county legislature’s Public Safety and Emergency Services Committee on Wednesday.

There have been allegations of mistreatment and poor condition in that unit.

County Legislator Genesis Ramos has toured the Goshen facility twice and has drawn her own conclusion.

“I think that’s really what the heart of the allegations in this report and previous reports are, I think less about the conditions and more about the treatment or things that are being said to individuals, specifically in the ICE unit,” she said.

Sheriff’s office Chief Meredith McGovern said when detainees leave this jail, the federal government is not releasing them, but rather transferring them to another facility.

“I am going to say as audited as we are, I am confident that they are getting way better treatment than they might get in a state outside New York coupled with they are local people here,” she said. “If we move them to Louisiana or Kentucky, their families have no way to visit them.”

County jail officials said the entire facility is audited three to four times per year and they are satisfactory.

Sheriff’s office officials said if there are ever allegations of poor conditions or alleged mistreatment of inmates, they are fully investigated.
