NEWBURGH – A Newburgh City Councilman would like to explore commuter rail service from Newburgh to New York City.
Newburgh area residents must cross the Hudson River to Beacon to catch direct rail service to New York.
Councilman Ronald Zorilla said he backs a full study of potential service on the west shore.
“I would love to support a resolution to do what many municipalities in the area have been doing giving the support to All Aboard Hudson Valley to explore a west of the Hudson commuter line that could potentially connect New York City to Newburgh and hopefully open up opportunities for residents to have access to jobs,” he said.
There is West of Hudson commuter service now running from Port Jervis across Orange County with a stop at Salisbury Mills, about eight miles from Newburgh. That line eventually ends up in New Jersey, where commuters can switch trains and head to Manhattan.
