LEWISBPORO – Two Lewisboro Police officers were burned, one seriously, while rescuing people from a Cross River house fire last week. Two people perished in that fire.

Lewisboro Police reported on Sunday that the officers, whose names were not made public, entered the 100-year-old wood frame home after receiving a report that two people were trapped inside when a sudden flashover resulted, injuring both officers.

The two individuals were transported to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla; one was admitted to the Burn Unit due to severe burns, while the other received treatment and was discharged.

The Lewisboro Police Department stated: “We appreciate that both officers are anticipated to make a full recovery. Their courageous actions exemplify the highest standards of our profession and reflect an unwavering commitment to protecting life.”

The fire claimed the life of 93-year-old Noel Rae and a second person still unidentified by authorities. Three other residents were able to flee the blaze and received treatment at Northern Westchester Hospital Center in Mt. Kisco before being released.

Troop K Public Information Officer Trooper Krystal Paolicelli said the fire broke out around 12:40 p.m. and 9-1-1 calls sent police and firefighters from Croton Falls, South Salem, Bedford Hills, Goldens Bridge, Bedford, Katonah in addition to several departments in Connecticut including Danbury and the Carmel, Brewster and Mahopac departments which covered agencies by backfilling fire houses.

Police said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
