KINGSTON – The sloop Clearwater begins its summer sailing on the Hudson River this weekend from Kingston.

It will be an abbreviated season, though, as it will conclude in mid-to late July so that the final phase of a more than 15-year hull rebuild can take place, said Clearwater organization Executive Director David Toman.

“Iet’s going to replace the top side, so everything you see from water level above in the hull and then the stern, so the back flat side of the boat where people see ‘Clearwater’s’ name as it sails by,” he said. “When this project is completed, it will have finished a 15-year effort to pretty much replace the full hull of this boat that was originally built and launched in 1969.”

This eight-month project will cost $1.2 million with the boat returning to the river in the spring of 2027.

Since it first launched, Clearwater has sailed with over 518,000 students, activists, musicians, families, decision-makers, and residents of the area.
