Donald Trump announced a new leadership team for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday, including a nominee for director and several senior public health appointments.
In a statement shared publicly, including a posted announcement, Trump said he is nominating Dr. Erica Schwartz to serve as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The position requires confirmation by the U.S. Senate before she can assume the role.
“I am pleased to announce the new leadership of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is my Honor to nominate the incredibly talented Dr. Erica Schwartz, MD, JD, MPH, as my Director of the CDC,” Trump said.
Schwartz previously served as deputy surgeon general during Trump’s first term and has a background in military medicine. According to the president’s statement, she graduated from Brown University for both undergraduate and medical education and served as a physician in the U.S. military.
“Erica graduated from Brown University for College and Medical School, and served a distinguished career as a Doctor of Medicine in the United States Military, the Greatest and Most Powerful Force in the World, and then served as my Deputy Surgeon General during my First Term,” Trump said. “She is a STAR!”
Trump also announced additional leadership roles within the agency. Sean Slovenski was named CDC deputy director and chief operating officer, while Dr. Jennifer Shuford was appointed deputy director and chief medical officer.
In addition, Dr. Sara Brenner was selected to serve as senior counselor for public health to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at the Department of Health and Human Services.
“I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Sean Slovenski as the CDC Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Jennifer Shuford, MD, MPH, as the CDC Deputy Director and Chief Medical Officer, and Dr. Sara Brenner, MD, MPH, as Senior Counselor for Public Health to Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.,” Trump said.
The announcement follows the conclusion of Dr. Jay Bhattacharya’s tenure as acting CDC director, which ended last month.
Trump said the incoming team would focus on strengthening scientific standards at the agency.
“These Highly Respected Doctors of Medicine have the knowledge, experience, and TOP degrees to restore the GOLD STANDARD OF SCIENCE at the CDC, which was an absolute disaster focused on ‘mandates’ under Sleepy Joe,” he said.
“Together, they will do a TREMENDOUS job leading the CDC as we continue to MAKE AMERICA HEALTHY AND GREAT AGAIN! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
The nominations and appointments mark a shift in leadership at the nation’s primary public health agency, with further action pending in the Senate for the director position.
