KINGSTON – The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office has received complaints of individuals being contacted by phone reporting to be members of the sheriff’s office with instructions on how to bail someone out of the county jail.

Sheriff’s officials said their agency never will contact anyone by phone to solicit any payments for any reason.

They said government entities will never request payments for anything be made with gift cards or currency apps such as Venmo or Cashapp.

Should you be contacted with similar circumstances, it is more than likely a scam, and you should cease all contact with that individual, deputies said.

If you believe you are a victim of this scam, contact the sheriff’s office dispatch at (845) 338-3640 to report it.
