NEWBURGH – The search for a new city manager will take place on a national level, members of the Newburgh City Council decided Thursday night.
But, some members of the governing body hinted that a manager form of government has not worked.
Councilwoman Ramona Monteverde was critical of the leadership of Todd Venning, who recently resigned after 3 ½ years at the helm.
“What we know is that it has not been working. People are very frustrated that our streets look the way that they look, that there’s garbage everywhere, that Broadway is an embarrassment,” she said. “We had a city manager who refused to even engage with the community. So that wasn’t working.”
The council is deliberating on a process to form a charter review commission to look at the future structure of city government.
Monteverde and other council members, including Ronald Zorrilla, agreed the city manager structure hasn’t worked.
When formed, an independent charter commission will recommend how to move forward in the future with the final decision being made by city residents.
