FITCHBURG — The City of Fitchburg Health Department will host a Community Narcan and Overdose Prevention Training on Wednesday, April 29, at the Legislative Building, 700 Main St.

Doors will open at 5:15 p.m. for local resource tables and refreshments, followed by the training at 6 p.m.

Naloxone, sold under the brand name Narcan, is an easy-to-use medication that blocks the effects of opioids (such as heroin, morphine, fentanyl, etc.) and can be used to reverse an opioid overdose.

The training will be given by Keith Barnaby, Fitchburg street outreach worker and a recovery coach.

Attendees will learn how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to respond, including when and how to use lifesaving Narcan. An opportunity to ask questions will be available.

“Being trained how to identify an opioid overdose, and what to do if one occurs, can save a life,” said Sue Christensen, Fitchburg outreach and prevention coordinator. The presentation will be informative and engaging, and we encourage all area residents to attend.”

Narcan will be distributed to all who attend.

This event is free and open to the community. Registration is suggested by calling Fitchburg Outreach at 978-829-1854; however walk-ins are welcome.

The City of Fitchburg is an affiliate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Community Naloxone Purchasing Program.
