FITCHBURG — The Department of Public Works advises residents of the following work that will be done, weather permitting, during the week of April 6, 2026.
Road Construction
Monday to Sunday 12 a.m. to 12 p.m.
River Street Bridge: MassDOT’s contractor Northern Construction has implemented a detour on the River Street Bridge. All southbound traffic will follow the West Street detour. Northbound traffic will be maintained.
Newton Place: Newton Place from Main Street to Boulder Drive will be closed to traffic. Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (expect road closures, traffic delays and/or detours).
Combination Sanitary Sewer/Storm Drain Separation Project
GVC will be performing the following work: New drainage installation on Marshall Street, New sewer installation on Villa Street. Water line testing and new drainage installation on Victor Street.
Main Street Water Main Improvements
Service interruptions to abutting properties are not anticipated.
JA Polito will be performing the following work: Temporary water main installation on Main Street between Mill Street and Lunenburg Street.
Temporary water service installation on Main Street between Mill Street and Blossom Street.
Water Street Bridge Replacement
MIG will be working on sewer installation on Boulder Drive. A full closure of Boulder Drive in the location of the Water Street Bridge will be implemented. Local traffic will be able to access the businesses along this route. All other traffic will be detoured.
Pipeline Replacement:
Unitil and its subcontractors Neuco and Path Mechanical will be conducting natural gas pipeline upgrade projects on Blossom Street from Main Street to Ross Street; Main Street from Wallace Ave to Blossom Street and the following streets: Middle Street, Railroad Street, Water Street Lane, 2nd Street, 3rd Street, 4th Street, Granite Street, Salem Street, Spruce Street, Hale Street, Lynn Street and Beekman Street. Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Minor traffic impacts
Pothole repairs, citywide Street repair in the vicinity of Ledgemore Street at the intersection of Warren Street. Stormwater maintenance to prevent flooding from blocked catch basins. Repair water gate boxes at various locations throughout the city. Various repair of the existing drainage infrastructure.
Hydrants, city-wide — inspecting hydrants for any plow/winter damage.
Hydrant flushing on the Scott System (hydrants with blue tops) in the Flat Rock Road and Burbank Hospital areas and on the Low System (hydrants with black tops) in the Blossom Street, Pleasant Street, Payson Street and Townsend Street areas.
Street Sweeping will commence in Ward 4. Residents and business owners are asked to sweep sidewalks in front of their homes ahead of their scheduled date. Sand should be placed in wind rows — not in piles — so that the equipment can successfully remove it.
