GROTON — Groton police and firefighters responded to a call of two youths stuck in a swamp on Wednesday, successfully helping them to safety.
“We don’t often have the opportunity to show how well Groton Fire and Police work together, but this week we had some video proof!” said a statement on the Groton Fire Department Facebook page.
At 4:58 p.m. on Wednesday, Groton Police was dispatched to the area of the James Brook for a 9-1-1 hang up. Upon arrival, officers located two youths stuck in the swampy area between the Nashua River Rail Trail and Broadmeadow Road.
Groton firefighters arrived on scene to assist with the water rescue.
One youth was able to walk out on their own, the other youth was stuck in the mud and needed assistance from the Groton Fire Department to get out of the marsh.
Groton Police deployed a drone to assist Groton Fire with locating the youth in the marsh as well as giving an aerial view of the scene, finding the best way for the rescuer to get the youth out of the marsh and on to dry land.
The rescuer used a dry suit and ladder to assist in getting the youth out of the mud. Both youths were checked for injuries and other than being cold and wet, were in good spirits.
“We may have our different approaches to solving problems, but in the end the goal is the same, to protect the citizens of Groton,” the Groton Fire Department posted online.
