POUGHKEEPSIE – Motorists traveling at night along Route 9, also known as South Road in Poughkeepsie, have been driving in the dark for more than one month now.

The LED street lamps, marketed as a high-efficiency method for illuminating areas, have been out of order for at least the past thirty days.

Not the entire length of Route 9 in the city, but just the lights between Vassar Brothers Medical Center and the southbound city line with the Town of Poughkeepsie, in the area of the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.  The only lighting in that well-traveled portion of the road, just more than a mile long, comes from vehicle headlights and those attached to billboards or buildings near the roadway.

There are at least 30 street lamps on the north and southbound sides of that section that are not working.

has not received a response to an inquiry submitted to New York State DOT.
