SOUTHEAST- Deputies on patrol in Southeast observed a vehicle with an expired inspection sticker affixed to its windshield.

At first glance, what was a routine traffic stop turned into what police say is a discovery of a large quantity of illegal narcotics.

Putnam Sheriff Brian Hess reported the arrest Friday of Paul Cancellaro, 53, of New Fairfield, Connecticut on multiple drug charges in connection with the incident.

The sheriff said during the investigation, deputies discovered 54 bags of cocaine and crack cocaine, totaling more than one-half ounce, along with additional controlled substances, concealed on Cancellaro’s person. Deputies also recovered drug paraphernalia consistent with the intent to distribute. Cancellaro was arrested and charged with:  Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Sell; Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance; Criminal Use of Drug Paraphernalia; as well as displaying a Forged Certificate Without Inspection.

The Connecticut man was arraigned in Southeast and remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility without bail.
