A quiet island community in Washington state has been thrust into an unsettling mystery after more than 20 dead canines were discovered along its shoreline — many of them skinned — leaving residents shaken and authorities searching for answers.

Officials say 21 canine carcasses have been found so far on and around Guemes Island, located roughly 80 miles north of Seattle. The discoveries began last Thursday and continued throughout the week, with most of the remains located near a stretch of coastline known as Kelly’s Point.

The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an investigation is underway, but key questions remain unanswered: where the animals came from, how they died, and how they ended up scattered along the island’s shores.

By midweek, the remains were collected and transferred to a forensic veterinarian for detailed examination. Necropsies — the animal equivalent of autopsies — are now being conducted alongside DNA testing in an effort to determine the species and cause of death.

Local officials say the scene has been deeply disturbing.

Guemes Island Fire Chief Olivia Cole described the discoveries as unlike anything the community has ever experienced. Search teams combed the area by both land and water, uncovering additional remains as the days went on.

“The search team went out by boat and on foot and found even more,” she said. “Now we’re at 21.”

Despite the growing number of carcasses, investigators still do not know whether the animals are domestic dogs, coyotes, or another species entirely. Early observations suggest they are similar in size and appearance, with some roughly comparable to a fox and others slightly larger. Several reportedly had black-and-white markings on their paws.

What has alarmed officials and residents most is the condition of the bodies.

According to Cole, all of the carcasses appeared to have been skinned, and some were missing front paws. Two were also found with orange twine tied around their necks — a detail that has only deepened suspicions that human involvement may be a factor.

At the same time, there were no obvious signs of gunshot wounds or injuries typically associated with organized animal fighting operations, leaving investigators without a clear explanation.

Guemes Island, home to around 600 residents, is a small and tightly knit community where unusual events rarely go unnoticed. The sudden appearance of so many animal remains has sparked intense speculation among locals.

Residents have floated a range of theories — from illegal animal activity to the possibility that the remains drifted from elsewhere via shipping routes. Large cargo vessels frequently pass through nearby waters, and neighboring islands are known to have animal breeders.

Still, officials caution that these are only theories, and no conclusions can be drawn until forensic testing is complete.

“This whole island is talking,” Cole said. “There are a lot of ideas going around, but we just don’t know yet.”

For those who have encountered the scene firsthand, the experience has been difficult to process.

Alexie Gregory, a longtime resident, said she came across multiple carcasses while walking along Kelly’s Point earlier in the week. What began as a single disturbing sight quickly escalated into something far more troubling.

“It was so eerie,” she said. “You’d see one, and then just a few minutes later, there would be another. We found so many that by the end, I just felt numb.”

The psychological impact has rippled through the island. Conversations in shops, along ferry routes, and between neighbors have centered almost entirely on the mystery, with many expressing both concern and a desire for accountability.

“This is what everyone is talking about,” Cole said. “We want to understand what happened — and if someone is responsible, we want them held accountable.”

The island itself has a long and unusual history with canines. It was once nicknamed “Dog Island,” a reference to the now-extinct Salish woolly dogs that were historically raised in the region. That legacy has only added an eerie layer to the current, as residents grapple with an unexplained and unsettling situation unfolding along their shores.

As investigators await the results of necropsies and DNA analysis, the case remains open and deeply puzzling. For now, the beaches of Guemes Island — typically quiet and scenic — have become the center of a mystery that has left an entire community searching for answers.
