PETERBOROUGH, N.H. — The Peterborough Heritage Commission will host another installment of its series Restoration & Remembrance where Cranberry Meadow Farm Inn owner Carolyn Hough will give a presentation on the preservation and renovation of this town landmark.
This event will take place on April 9 at 7 p.m. in the Select Board Room of the Peterborough Town House at 1 Grove St.
The Restoration & Remembrance series celebrates notable local historic properties and the people who have helped preserve them.
This feature will highlight Cranberry Meadow Farm Inn, with Hough sharing the property’s rich history and the restoration work that has brought it back to life.
Built in 1797 as the Wilson Tavern, the building served as an important community center for more than three decades. With 21 rooms and 11 fireplaces, it hosted town gatherings, provided space for militia activity during the American Revolution, served drovers moving cattle to Boston, and is even reported to have been part of the Underground Railroad.
Many original features — such as early strap hinges, locks and fire bucket hooks — still remain, offering a rare glimpse into early New England craftsmanship and daily life.
After its years as a tavern, the property transitioned into a family residence before undergoing careful and thoughtful restoration.
Today, Cranberry Meadow Farm Inn retains its historic character while offering modern comforts across its 80 acres of gardens, woodlands and scenic views, ensuring the site continues to serve as a welcoming place for guests and the community alike.
The commission invites residents, history lovers and supporters of preservation to take part in this storytelling initiative. For more information, contact Trisha Cheever, energy and community planner, at [email protected] or 603-924-8000, Ext 107.
