The driver and a passenger of a white van being pursued by ICE in a pair of MetroWest towns fled from agents on foot after crashing into an agent-occupied vehicle, according to local authorities.

The chaotic scene unfolded on Wednesday morning in Milford and Medway, and the two occupants of the van were not taken into custody, Medway Police Chief William Kingsbury said in a release.

Kingsbury’s department responded to multiple reports of what the chief described as unmarked police vehicles “traveling at a high rate of speed” in the area of West and Fisher streets just before 8 a.m.

Medway Police also received a report of a white van crashing on Fisher Street, and that agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement appeared to be on scene.

“Upon arrival, our officers were advised by federal agents that ICE had attempted to stop a white van on Route 109 in Milford,” Kingsbury stated. “The vehicle fled, struck an agent-occupied vehicle, and continued eastbound into Medway via West Street before turning onto Fisher Street.”

The driver and a passenger of the van, which was still moving, exited the vehicle and fled from the scene. The van crashed near high-tension power lines after leaving the busy roadway.

Kingsbury stated that no injuries were reported.

Federal agents reportedly pursued the driver and passenger on foot, while others searched the area with their vehicles. Kingsbury added that while the van was removed, “the occupants were not taken into custody.”

“The Medway Police Department was not involved in the enforcement operation,” the chief stated, “other than assisting with traffic control and facilitating the vehicle’s removal to safely reopen the roadway.”

ICE has not immediately responded to a Herald request for comment.
