TOWN OF LLOYD — Highland firefighters, with assistance from a Lloyd police officer, rescued an elderly woman trapped in a burning house early Friday on Vineyard Avenue, authorities said. The fire was reported at 12:26 a.m.

Highland Fire District Chief Jeffrey DiMetro said his assistant chief was first to arrive about eight minutes after the alarm, and found the house engulfed in flames on two sides. Lloyd police officers were outside with two occupants who had managed to escape.

A second alarm was sounded, and additional firefighters and equipment from surrounding departments responded to the scene.

When the first Highland engine arrived, three firefighters, assisted by a Lloyd police officer, entered the home through a first-floor window, located the elderly woman and brought her out of the burning house.

DiMetro said firefighters provided emergency medical care to the rescued woman, while members of the New Paltz Rescue Squad treated the other two occupants. The elderly woman was transported to a local hospital, where she remains in the intensive care unit.

Firefighters from multiple departments brought the fire under control just before 2 a.m.

Highland Fire District members remained at the scene until about 5:30 a.m. to ensure the blaze was fully extinguished.

Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Milton, Esopus, New Paltz, Clintondale and the career firefighters from the Poughkeepsie Fire Department in Dutchess County.

Commenting on the actions of the first responders, Lloyd Police Chief James Janso said “I am very proud of our police department and the amazing dedicated volunteers of the Highland Fire Department.”

The Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
