FITCHBURG — A $35,000 joint investment from the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts and the United Way will expand emergency shelter capacity at Opportunities for Hope and give children a safe place to play.
For the children staying at the Barbara Garneau House, a family shelter in Fitchburg, the view from the window will soon look a little different. A new playground, funded in part by a grant from the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts and the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, is coming to the courtyard, a small but meaningful signal that this place is not just shelter. It is, however briefly, home.
Opportunities for Hope, the Fitchburg-based nonprofit that operates the Garneau House along with transitional housing and wraparound support services, announced this week that it has received $20,000 from CFNCM and an additional $15,000 from the United Way of North Central Massachusetts. Together, the funds will support expanded emergency shelter capacity and deeper supportive services for families experiencing homelessness across the region — including case management, employment assistance, financial literacy coaching and help securing permanent housing.
Family homelessness has remained one of the most acute and persistent challenges in North Central Massachusetts, with demand for emergency shelter consistently outpacing available resources. Opportunities for Hope has long been on the front lines of that crisis, but officials on both sides of this new partnership say additional investment is urgently needed.
“Behind every request for shelter is a family facing one of the hardest moments of their lives parents doing everything they can to protect their children, and children just needing a safe place to sleep,” said Ada Alvarado, director of operations for Opportunities for Hope.
Douglas M. Bushman, CEO of Opportunities for Hope, said the timing of the grant is especially meaningful as warmer weather approaches. “I cannot thank Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts enough for this timely donation,” he said. “As spring approaches, we are looking to purchase playground equipment so the children living in the shelters can relax and enjoy the outdoors.”
For CFNCM, the grant reflects a deliberate grantmaking strategy centered on organizations with proven records of impact. Housing security sits near the top of that agenda.
“In North Central Massachusetts, we know that stable housing is the foundation on which everything else is built: a child’s success in school, a parent’s ability to hold a job, a family’s ability to stay together,” said Stephen Adams, president and CEO of the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts.
Founded in 2001, the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts serves 33 communities across the region, connecting philanthropic resources to local nonprofits, schools, and social service providers.
