On March 22, 2026, an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 aircraft, operated by Jazz Aviation, crashed into a fire truck while landing at LaGuardia Airport.
The plane, which had departed from Montreal, was carrying 72 passengers and four crew members when the tragic incident unfolded. Both the pilot and the first officer were tragically killed in the crash, while 41 people on board the flight were injured, with nine suffering serious injuries.
The crash forced the closure of LaGuardia Airport, one of the busiest airports in New York City, until 2 p.m. ET on Monday, according to the FAA.
Fire Truck Response:
The fire truck had been responding to an emergency involving a separate United Airlines flight that had reported an odor onboard. The truck had been cleared to cross the runway at Taxiway Delta when it collided with the incoming Air Canada flight. Air traffic control recordings revealed that the truck was instructed to stop just moments before the collision occurred.
Investigations Underway:
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has dispatched a team of experts to investigate the accident. Both the NTSB and the Canadian Transportation Safety Board are collaborating on the investigation.
Aviation safety experts are scrutinizing communication protocols between air traffic controllers and the airport rescue crew, as well as air traffic control staffing levels, which have been a point of concern in U.S. aviation for some time.
Impact on LaGuardia Operations:
In addition to the tragic loss of life and injuries, the incident severely disrupted air traffic at LaGuardia, with hundreds of flights canceled and delays expected throughout the day.
The closure of the airport added to existing travel challenges caused by staffing shortages across the aviation sector, particularly with air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers.
Aviation Safety and System Strain:
The accident at LaGuardia highlights ongoing concerns about the state of the U.S. aviation system, particularly in light of recent safety incidents and operational delays.
The crash follows a series of aviation safety issues, including a helicopter collision and other fatal incidents over the past year. Lawmakers have already begun discussions about comprehensive safety reforms.
As authorities continue to investigate, the aviation industry is once again reminded of the critical need for effective communication and staffing in ensuring safe operations.
