CHESTER – A fire that broke out in a single-family bi-level home on Tulip Lane in the Town of Chester Sunday morning claimed one life, town police said.

The fire was already through the roof when firefighters arrived and was totally destroyed.

A woman and her four children were evacuated, but one occupant succumbed to the fire, officials said.

The Red Cross provided financial assistance to the residence, including the mother and children, ages four, eight, nine and 12. Authorities did not say which occupant died.

Chester Town Police were assisted at the scene by deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

The Orange County Fire Services and Hudson Valley Arson and Explosives Task Force provided fire investigation services at the scene. Deputy Sheriff King and Arson K-9 Nova also assisted.

The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical and found to have started in the living room.
