ASHBURNHAM — Two Fitchburg men were arrested Friday after a car chase that police say started with a suspected robbery, according to Ashburnham Police Chief Chris Conrad.

Orange Police tried to stop the suspects’ vehicle in Orange at about 10:30 a.m., but the car fled both Orange and State Police cruisers, eventually going into Westminster on Route 140, Conrad said.

Ashburnham officers at the Winchendon/Ashburnham observed the vehicle entering Ashburnham at a high rate of speed and they attempted to pull the car over but it continues south on Route 12.

Stop sticks were deployed, and the car struck the sticks on Route 12 near Lashua Road, with the sticks being set up to prevent the speeding car from reaching Main Street. The vehicle was able to continue onto Main Street, but went out of control at the intersection of Main and Cushing streets.

Conrad said the vehicle hit several curbs and went off the road at 85 Main St. where it struck and moved two parked cars at St. Denis Church.

Police said the two occupants of the car ran away but were apprehended almost immediately by Ashburnham and State Police officers. One of the suspects was taken into custody on the Cushing Academy campus.

Orange Police arrived and took custody of both suspects, who they say both also had active warrants.

Police arrested both suspects, Echevarria Torres, 42, of Fitchburg, and William De Jese Rodriguez, 37, of Fitchburg, and said they will face motor vehicle and property damage charges in Ashburnham, and police said they will face other charges from the other towns they went through, as well.

Westminster, Winchendon, Orange and State Police all assisted in the incident.

One suspect and one officer were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
