Seven years ago, Ashley Bugge's world shattered when she received a phone call that changed everything. Her husband, Navy Ensign Brian Bugge, tragically drowned during a specialized scuba diving course in Hawaii. Left as a young widow with two toddlers and a third baby on the way, Ashley had to find a way to navigate unimaginable grief.
But Brian’s deep passion for the sea inspired a breathtaking tribute. Today, his legacy lives on not just in memories, but physically at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. Ashley and her family placed a memorial reef—a three-foot-tall structure containing his ashes—on the ocean floor near the spot of their very first dive together. Engraved on his memorial plaque are the words he truly lived by: "Live a life you will remember".

This ocean grave has become a beautiful place of healing and celebration. On the seventh anniversary of his passing, Ashley and her friends suited up in scuba gear to dive down to Brian's memorial, while her three children—Izzy, Hudson, and Addy—gathered to honor him.

Sharing a profoundly moving update, Ashley wrote directly to Brian: "Today we dive. We dive, we remember, we celebrate, and we mourn Brian James Bugge. You taught us so much about the value of life while you were here with us and though you were taken far too soon, you have continued to bring people from around the globe together to learn this important lesson. Life is too short to not enjoy it, to push yourself, to encourage others, to savor the moments, sights, and breaths we have."
Despite growing up without their father physically present, Brian's children are intimately connected to his adventurous spirit.
Ashley proudly shared, "The kids are growing up knowing the man you were and how their lives have been shaped by the experiences we had, and then didn’t get to have, with you. They know you, and more importantly they know themselves, and the lessons you’re teaching them from your oceanic grave. They’re water babies, they’re fearless, they’re smart, and they’re kind. You’d be so unbelievably proud."

Ultimately, the Bugge family's story is a powerful testament to finding purpose after a devastating loss. As Ashley beautifully encouraged her supporters on that anniversary: "Celebrate the moments we have and live a life you will remember. And please feel free to share pictures and stories so the kids and I can celebrate along with you!"
