WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. officials are urging Americans living or traveling in the Middle East to register for emergency alerts and stay in close contact with U.S. embassies as the security situation across the region continues to evolve.
The warning highlights the importance of enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service operated by the U.S. Department of State that provides real-time security information and allows U.S. embassies to contact citizens during emergencies.
Officials say the program allows Americans abroad to receive critical updates such as security alerts, demonstration warnings, health advisories, natural disaster notifications, and travel advisory changes. Enrollment also helps U.S. embassies locate and assist citizens quickly in crisis situations.
Emergency Assistance for Americans Abroad
The State Department emphasized that Americans needing urgent help can contact the Consular Affairs Emergency Helpline.
• +1-202-501-4444 (for calls from outside the United States)
• +1-888-407-4747 (from the U.S. or Canada)
Officials say these lines are available for travelers who require immediate assistance or guidance related to security concerns abroad.
Possible Government-Facilitated Departures
In light of the evolving regional tensions, the State Department also announced that Americans in several Middle Eastern countries may request information about potential government-facilitated departure options if conditions worsen.
U.S. citizens currently in countries such as Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates can complete a government form to receive updates on possible departure assistance if such operations become necessary.
Regional Travel Advisories
The State Department continues to monitor conditions across the broader region, including Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen, urging travelers to check the latest embassy alerts and official travel advisories before moving within the region.
Officials stress that registering with STEP and monitoring embassy updates are currently the most effective ways for Americans abroad to receive reliable information during rapidly changing security conditions in the Middle East. Additional updates and resources are expected to be shared as the situation develops.
