WASHINGTON, D.C. – Professor Kazem Kazerounian, a professor at the University of Connecticut, said that the ultimate collapse of Iran’s ruling system will depend on the ability of organized resistance forces inside the country to take control of the regime’s key military and security centers, particularly those run by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Speaking in a strategic interview with One America News Network (OAN), Kazerounian argued that the current political and military developments surrounding Iran indicate that the ruling system known as Velayat-e Faqih has reached a critical stage of instability.
“The current escalation and the devastating external strikes hitting the regime—combined with the new political reality following the death of Ali Khamenei and the struggle by his son Mojtaba Khamenei to preserve the pillars of power—suggest that the system is approaching its inevitable end,” Kazerounian said.
However, he stressed that external pressure alone cannot determine the outcome of the crisis.
According to Kazerounian, the decisive moment will come only when organized resistance units inside Iran gain control of the regime’s command infrastructure, including major palaces, IRGC headquarters, and military and security centers in Tehran and other cities.
“No military operations or international pressure can be considered a complete success until the Resistance Units and the field forces of the Iranian Resistance take control of the regime’s main command centers,” he said.
Kazerounian emphasized that international powers appear reluctant to conduct ground intervention in Iran, which he described as a positive development. Instead, he argued that the primary force capable of bringing political change is the organized resistance movement inside the country that has opposed the regime for decades.
He highlighted the role of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), describing it as the only organized political structure capable of managing a transition period after the fall of the current system.
“The NCRI, with its clear political program and leadership structure, is prepared to fill any political vacuum and guide Iran through a transitional phase,” Kazerounian said.
He also pointed to the proposal of Maryam Rajavi, who has called for the formation of a provisional government based on a 10-point plan aimed at establishing a democratic and non-nuclear republic in Iran.
Kazerounian said the proposed plan would help transfer sovereignty to the Iranian people and bring an end to what he described as a long history of dictatorship in the country, including both the monarchy of the Shah and the current clerical system.
“The democratic alternative is ready,” he concluded. “The Resistance Units will ultimately determine the final chapter in the fall of this regime, opening the way for a new era of freedom, justice, and democratic governance in Iran”:
