Diego Fagundez is returning to where 16-year MLS career began.
The New England Revolution announced the return of the forward on Friday morning, signing the 31-year-old to a one-year deal. The contract includes a club option for the 2027 season.
Fagundez, born in Montevideo, Uruguay and raised in Leominster, played his first 10 MLS seasons with the Revolution. He signed with the team as the organization’s first Homegrown Player out of the Revolution Academy at the age of 15 and made his pro debut a year later in August 2011.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Diego Fagundez back to the New England Revolution, the place where he started his career and truly made his mark as our inaugural Homegrown signing,” Sporting Director Curt Onalfo said in a release from the team. “Diego is an excellent addition to our group who brings a proven track record of offensive productivity, technical quality, and deep MLS experience that will strengthen our attack and give us more options moving forward.”
Fagundez has 79 goals along with 79 assists over 424 regular season appearances, 10th most on the MLS all-time list. Beyond his time with New England, he has played with Austin FC (2021-2023), and the LA Galaxy (2023-2025) and his appearance and goal totals are both fourth among all active players, while his 158 goal contributions are the most among current MLS players and 15th all-time.
“When I left New England, I knew I wanted to return here one day to play for the fans who have supported me since I was a teenager,” Fagundez said in the team’s release. “I feel I have grown tremendously both on and off the pitch over these last few years. My family and I are so excited to be back with the club that gave me my first professional opportunity. The Revolution and our supporters have always held a special place in my heart, and I can’t wait to take the pitch at Gillette Stadium again soon representing my boyhood club.”

In addition to his regular season totals, Fagundez has played in a dozen MLS Cup postseason contests, most recently appearing in four games and notching an assist in the Galaxy’s run to the MLS Cup 2024.
He was voted the Galaxy’s 2025 Player of the Year with six goals and three assists and became the eighth player in league history to reach the 75-goal, 75-assist mark, while becoming the youngest player to record 300 starts in league history.
Fagundez’s name is etched all over the New England record books. He’s tied for the second omst games played in club history, while ranking second in goals and fourth in assists, while holding the mark for being the youngest player to appear in a game and score in team history at 16 years old.
He’s made 261 MLS regular season appearances for the Revs, netting 53 goals and adding 45 assists over 10 seasons and was named Revolution Team MVP in 2013. Fagundez is one of only four players in team history to score 40 goals and dish out 40 assists in MLS play.
“Adding Diego Fagundez to our roster provides yet another dangerous element to our team in the attacking end,” Revolution Head Coach Marko Mitrović said in the team’s press release. “Diego’s achievements in MLS and with the Revolution are well documented, but even more importantly, his level has only continued to increase as he has matured as a player. With over 400 MLS appearances at only 31 years old, we are fortunate to have a player of Diego’s caliber in New England. I look forward to integrating him into the group quickly.”
New England seeks its first win of the 2026 campaign Sunday, hosting FC Cincinnati for a 2:30 p.m. contest at Gillette Stadium.
