The man shot and killed after opening fire at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, on Thursday has been identified as Mohamed Jalloh, a former Army National Guardsman who was previously convicted of attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State.
Multiple news organizations reported the identity of the suspect following the shooting at the university, including coverage from CBS News and other national outlets.
Jalloh had previously been sentenced in federal court after authorities determined he attempted to assist the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to a Justice Department case record.
Federal prosecutors said Jalloh met in 2016 with an ISIS member as well as an FBI informant during the investigation.
According to a Justice Department announcement describing the case, Jalloh expressed a desire to carry out an attack similar to the 2009 Fort Hood shooting carried out by Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at a Texas military installation.
The Justice Department said Jalloh was later convicted and sentenced for attempting to provide material support to the terrorist organization, as outlined in a prior federal case described in a Justice Department sentencing record.
Investigators said the earlier case began after Jalloh made contact with individuals he believed were connected to ISIS.
Federal officials arrested him after gathering evidence that he was attempting to aid the group.
Details about how Jalloh came to be on the Old Dominion University campus and the circumstances surrounding Thursday’s shooting remain under investigation.
Earlier reports from university officials confirmed that two people were injured during the shooting and transported to a hospital.
Authorities said the suspect was killed during the incident.
Old Dominion University suspended campus operations for the remainder of Thursday following the emergency response at Constant Hall.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the shooting and have not yet released additional details about the victims or a possible motive.
