Bayern Munich returns to Bundesliga action this weekend with a challenging trip to Bayer Leverkusen following a week of sharply contrasting European results for the two German clubs. The league leaders arrive in strong form after a commanding performance in the Champions League, while Leverkusen will be looking to build momentum after holding one of Europe’s top sides to a draw.
Bayern delivered one of the most dominant displays of the midweek Champions League fixtures, defeating Atalanta 6–1 in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie. The emphatic victory demonstrated Bayern’s attacking power and reinforced their reputation as one of the tournament’s most dangerous teams.
However, the triumph was not without concern. Several injury issues emerged during the match, casting uncertainty over the availability of key players ahead of their domestic clash with Leverkusen.
Leverkusen, meanwhile, had a far more tightly contested European outing. The German side managed a 1–1 draw against Premier League leaders Arsenal in their own round-of-16 matchup. While they were unable to secure a win, the result keeps the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg and preserves Leverkusen’s hopes of advancing further in the competition.
Domestically, Bayern continues to dominate the Bundesliga standings. Vincent Kompany’s side holds an 11-point lead at the top of the table with only nine matches remaining in the season. That advantage places them firmly on course for another league title, though the trip to Leverkusen represents one of the more difficult remaining fixtures on their schedule.
Leverkusen has proven to be a difficult venue for Bayern in recent years. The Bavarian giants have not won a Bundesliga match at Leverkusen since October 2021. Although Bayern did secure a victory at the same stadium during a Champions League playoff last season, their recent domestic record there suggests the match could present a significant challenge.
While Bayern remains firmly in control of the title race, other parts of the Bundesliga table remain fiercely competitive.
Hoffenheim has emerged as one of the season’s surprise performers and currently sits in third place. If the club maintains that position through the end of the campaign, it would mark Hoffenheim’s best league finish since the 2017–18 season, when Julian Nagelsmann guided the team into the Champions League.
Hoffenheim faces Wolfsburg on Saturday in a matchup between teams experiencing dramatically different seasons. Wolfsburg has endured a deeply disappointing campaign and currently sits in the relegation zone. The club has already made two managerial changes this season, with Dieter Hecking becoming the team’s third head coach as the club struggles to avoid dropping into the second division.
Another major storyline in the Bundesliga involves the race for Champions League qualification. Stuttgart currently occupies fourth place and enters its weekend match in strong form after going unbeaten in its last four league games.
Their opponent, Leipzig, sits just behind them in fifth place and has also enjoyed a solid run, remaining unbeaten in five Bundesliga matches. The meeting between the two clubs on Sunday could play a decisive role in shaping the battle for the final Champions League qualification spot.
Several individual players are also attracting attention as the season enters its final stages.
Stuttgart forward Deniz Undav has been particularly impressive in recent weeks. He has scored in each of his last four Bundesliga matches and now has 15 goals for the season. While that tally is still well behind Bayern’s prolific striker Harry Kane, it is enough to place Undav second in the league’s scoring charts.
Undav’s strong performances could potentially earn him a return to the German national team as preparations intensify for the upcoming World Cup. Continued scoring form over the final weeks of the Bundesliga season may strengthen his case for selection.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck is emerging as one of the most closely watched players ahead of the summer transfer window. The center-back’s contract with Dortmund is set to expire next year, and negotiations over a renewal have yet to produce a clear resolution.
If the club cannot secure a new deal, Schlotterbeck could become one of the most sought-after defenders on the market. Reports suggest that Dortmund may consider restructuring its finances by allowing other players to leave, potentially freeing funds to secure Schlotterbeck’s long-term future. Dortmund faces Augsburg on Sunday in another important league fixture.
Bayern’s preparations for the Leverkusen match have been complicated by a series of injury concerns, particularly in the goalkeeping department.
Veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had only recently returned from a calf injury when he suffered another setback. After playing just 45 minutes in his comeback appearance last week, Neuer experienced further problems with the same muscle and was unable to participate in Bayern’s Champions League victory against Atalanta.
Jonas Urbig stepped in as a replacement during the European match but was also forced off after sustaining an injury in a heavy collision with an opposing player. As a result, third-choice goalkeeper Sven Ulreich may be called upon to start against Leverkusen if neither Neuer nor Urbig is fit.
Bayern could receive some positive news in attack, however. Star striker Harry Kane, who missed two recent matches with a calf issue, is expected to return to the squad.
Other injury concerns remain unresolved. Canadian international Alphonso Davies has been sidelined with a hamstring strain, while young midfielder Jamal Musiala has been dealing with lingering discomfort related to an ankle injury he suffered last year. The extent to which Musiala’s condition will affect his playing time in the coming weeks remains uncertain.
Away from the action on the field, two unusual disciplinary cases have captured the attention of German football supporters.
The German Football Association has launched an investigation into Cologne after the club’s stadium announcer was accused of using the public address system to criticize refereeing decisions during a recent match. Officials are examining whether the comments violated league regulations designed to prevent clubs from influencing or pressuring match officials.
In another incident, second-division club Preussen Muenster faces disciplinary proceedings after a masked spectator reportedly interfered with a referee’s video review system. During a penalty check against the team, the fan allegedly unplugged the video monitor used for the decision, briefly disrupting the VAR process.
As the Bundesliga season moves toward its conclusion, Bayern Munich remains firmly in control of the title race. Yet the upcoming visit to Leverkusen represents one of the few remaining opportunities for a rival to challenge the league leaders.
For Bayern, the match is another step toward securing the championship. For Leverkusen, it offers a chance to disrupt the runaway leaders and add another dramatic chapter to one of the Bundesliga’s most intriguing matchups.
