NEW CITY – Congressman Michael Lawler (R, NY-17), pushed back on Wednesday at two Democratic Rockland County legislators who said to reopen the Indian Point nuclear power plant would be a mistake.
Lawler and US Energy Secretary Chris Wright were at the closed-down power plant in Buchanan days ago calling for it to reopen, saying it would lower electricity costs.
But, Rockland lawmakers Alden Wolfe and Beth Davidson cited long-standing safety, health and environmental concerns about the facility across the Hudson River in Westechester County.
Wolfe pointed to the 2.3-magnitude earthquake centered in nearby Sleepy Hollow as one reason alone to keep the plant closed.
“I’ve always been concerned about its safety, the risks to the folks in the area. It sits on a fault, it’s a terrorist target, so it was rightfully closed for all of these reasons,” he said. “It’s mind-boggling to suggest that we should be reopening it.”
On Wednesday, the Republican Lawler called Davidson and Wolfe “spineless politicians” who are “more interested in letting politics, not science, drive our energy decisions and are happy to kill good-paying union jobs, crush our municipalities and school districts with lost tax revenue, and stop clean, reliable, and affordable energy for consumers.”
Wolfe said told Mid-Hudson News that nuclear power “is not a non-starter, in my view. “There are ways of doing it that make sense,” but Indian Point is not one of them,” he said.
