Law enforcement agencies were warned to remain alert as officials monitor potential retaliation scenarios tied to Middle East tensions.

Federal authorities recently warned law enforcement agencies in California about a potential security risk involving drones that could originate from offshore vessels, according to a law enforcement alert circulated in late February.
The warning, described in a report by ABC News, said intelligence indicated Iran had explored the possibility of launching unmanned aerial vehicles from a vessel positioned off the U.S. West Coast as a form of retaliation if the United States conducted military strikes against Iran.
Officials reviewing the alert said it outlined a hypothetical scenario rather than a confirmed plot, and provided limited operational details regarding potential timing, targets or individuals who might be involved.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom said state officials are monitoring developments closely but emphasized that authorities are not currently aware of any immediate threat.
“I am in constant coordination with security and intelligence officials, including @Cal_OES, to monitor potential threats to California — including those tied to the conflict in the Middle East,” Newsom said in a statement shared on X. “While we are not aware of any imminent threats at this time, we remain prepared for any emergency in our state.”
The bulletin circulated among law enforcement agencies suggested that Iranian planners had considered launching drones from an unidentified vessel positioned off the U.S. coastline. However, authorities said the information did not include specifics about the type of vessel involved, the location of a potential launch point or the targets that might be involved.
Officials said the warning therefore carried significant implications but lacked detailed intelligence necessary for precise operational planning.
The alert comes amid broader concerns about potential homeland security risks linked to tensions in the Middle East.
The Department of Homeland Security previously issued a notice through the National Terrorism Advisory System, warning that the conflict involving Iran had contributed to what officials described as a heightened threat environment inside the United States.
Separately, DHS’s annual Homeland Threat Assessment concluded that Iran continues to maintain the capability to conduct attacks using proxy organizations and asymmetric tactics, including potential targeting of current or former U.S. officials.
A more recent intelligence review cited by Reuters also said that while a large-scale physical attack inside the United States is considered unlikely, Iranian actors and affiliated groups may still pose an ongoing risk of targeted retaliatory actions.
Officials noted that such tactics could include methods designed to complicate detection or attribution, including the use of drones or other remote platforms.
Although the California warning has not been supported by a publicly released FBI document, it has been referenced by multiple media outlets reporting on the alert.
For local law enforcement agencies, the notification highlights the possibility that drone threats could emerge from offshore locations during periods of elevated geopolitical tension.
Authorities said the advisory was intended to encourage heightened awareness among police departments and security agencies while federal and state officials continue monitoring developments related to the conflict.
