GOSHEN – A Middletown man was sentenced in Orange County Court on Tuesday to 25 years to life in state prison in connect with the death of his girlfriend’s three-year-old son.
Gionni Sellers, 26, was previously convicted by a jury of murder and manslaughter in the death of Xavier Johnson while the youngster was in his care.
It was alleged that for a period of time in May and June 2022, Sellers was responsible for watching the child.
In June, police found Xavier unresponsive and not breathing. It was determined that Sellers had inflicted blunt force trauma to his head and torso, causing trauma to his brain.
A review of Sellers’ phone found interest searches including “why do younger men want to hurt a baby” and “baby breathing heavy after being shook.”
The investigation was conducted by Wallkill Town Police with assistance from Strate Police, the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
