SHIRLEY — Authorities have launched an investigation after human remains were discovered on Wednesday in the water near the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge, where early findings have raised concern about foul play.
The discovery was made at about 5:30 p.m. by a group of young people walking near the bridge, who reported seeing “what appeared to be something consistent with a body part in the water,” according to a joint press release from the Shirley Police Department and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
Responding officers confirmed the presence of human remains.
“Based upon the preliminary investigation, foul play is suspected,” it stated in the release, which was issued shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday.
The State Police Underwater Recovery Team was on scene Thursday morning searching Phoenix Pond, which is beside the Maritime Veterans Memorial Bridge on Shaker Road. The bridge crosses Catacoonamug Brook, the waterway connected to the pond.
In a social media post late Thursday morning, the Shirley Police Department said there is no threat to public safety.
The investigation, which includes the DA’s Office, the Shirley Police, and State Police detectives, is expected to continue into Friday.
