PORT JERVIS – Port Jervis turned out the green once again, joining together on Sunday afternoon to celebrate the city’s eighth annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Blarney Blast.  Hosted by Port Jervis’ Tourism Board, floats, bands, bagpipers, dancers, officials, organizations, and individuals drew applause as they marched from Orange Street to the downtown business district.

Festivities continued there with performances by parade units and presentation of trophies for various categories of participation.

Tourism Board Chairwoman and Parade Coordinator Laura Myer joined others in deeming the parade a success and a fun afternoon together.

“It was great!  Great participants, music, business, and organizations,” Myer said, adding, “The spectators were spectacular!  Lots of excited children, and those young at heart. A sea of green!”

Second Ward Councilperson and Tourism Board member Maria Mann, whose own family was also present, agreed.

“It’s great seeing everyone while celebrating the Irish culture. It really brings people together,” Mann said.

Leading the parade was this year’s Parade Grand Marshal Barbara Drew.  The great granddaughter of Irish immigrants, she said her maternal great-grandfather, among others, immigrated from Ireland.

“He was one of the original workers on the Erie Railroad when it first started in Port Jervis. I haven’t done much research, but I know others from my mother’s family also came from Ireland,” Drew said.

Having been asked to serve as this year’s Grand Marshal, Drew was honored to attend with her husband, daughter, and others.  She said the parade was great, crediting the Tourism Board for the hard work she knows goes into this each year.

“I enjoyed it all.  It was a great day, and an honor!  I really appreciate it,” Drew said.  “It will be a highlight in my life.”
